At Grandma's House

Each year we travel to our hometowns to have Thanksgiving with our families. We are fortunate that our parents live within 15 miles of each other. That means that with a little planning we can have lunch at my mom's and dinner at Bob's! When we say we are stuffed, we really mean it!

The Steffes clan trades between Bob's hometown of Wien and Macon, where the Steffes sisters lived (both have passed away, but we still go to Macon to see the families). We take a dish to share and there is always tons of food. It is Bob's favorite Thanksgiving because the stuffing has apples and raisins and other things in it. There is always mincemeat pie (ewwww!).

Of course my favorite Thanksgiving is my mom's. There the stuffing is with onion and sage and my mom makes the best homemade noodles ever. My sister has learned the art of making my Grandmother Holt's rolls which are yeast rolls that are folded over and are heavenly.

I hope throughout November I learn of other Thanksgiving traditions from your families. Sharing traditions makes us grow closer and realize that we are truly connected.

The first photo is of photos from my mom's Thanksgiving and the second is Ashley in 2005 at Grandma Steffes' house in Wien.

At Grandma's House

I like the taste of turkey
Any time throughout the year
But it never
seems to taste as good
As when Thanksgiving's here.

Could be it's all the trimmings
That are cooked with it to eat-
But I think it's
eating at Grandma's house
That makes it such a treat!

  1. That is so true....we live on the opposite Coast of all our family...so the past 7 years it's just been us...no visitors...it's not the same and I know what you mean. We all miss it but try to make our own traditions...hopefully next year we will be able to travel back East to visit everyone.

Actually for the past couple of years for Thanksgiving it has been at our house with just our family. With my son now married we are the in-laws and someday the grandparents house!! So we're just starting the tradition early. I like it quieter with just our family for Thanksgiving. To me it is more of a thoughtful reflective day!

Christmas to me is more fun as a crowd!! (with lots of good food)

  3. It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is soon. It's our family's favorite time of the year. We all make a point of being together for Thanksgiving so everywhere can be at home for Christmas.

    I love the sweet poem.

    Hugs!

  4. There's nothing better than Grandma's homemade rolls! I tried to make the rolls one Thanksgiving. It was a disaster...they were very heavy!!!
    Lovely picture of Ashley!!!
