Lazy Days of Summer

I had the wonderful opportunity to read Lazy Days of Summer by Judy Young earlier this year when she came to visit my school as an author in residence. This book really spoke to me and thought I would do a post every Wednesday after summer officially begins on the 21st of June.

She talks about going out to play on her first page. What do you play in the summer? As a child I loved to jumprope and Judy talks about jumproping. As an adult, though, Bob and I love to play golf and once in a great while, we will play tennis. Eric loves tennis and I am sure he could get Bob out to play if he asked and promised to be kind!

What were your favorite jumprope rhymes? Mine were blue bells, cockle shells, eevy, ivy over... and A My Name is Alice.

Would you like to comment?

  1. I don't get the "...and a my name is alice" it doesn't seem to go with the rhyme...I love this post idea, though!! I can't wait to read more!

  2. Hi Terri, this is the first time I could get the current blogs on here. It kept going back to one in April. Anyway, just weird. Love your outdoor Wednesday pictures (Zinnias rock) and your pen sounds neat. Love to see a picture.

Awwww....summer on my grandparents farms. Fireflies, ice cream on the porch, feeding the lambs with bottles, playing hide and seek in the corn, having apple fights from the apples fallen off the trees, eating sour cherries while sitting in the tree (you had to eat until you got a bad stomachache - ha) and ride, ride, riding our bikes! That was summer.

Summer now is gardening, eating the fruits of bounty, watching granddaughters ride, ride, riding their bikes and melting into the air conditioning.

  3. I love summer!

Growing up, we lived outside! Riding bikes, chasing down the Good Humor truck, swimming, playing tennis, sunbathing, catching fireflies, BBQs, picnics, swinging, baseball, soccer, and generally running amuck!

Now I get to do all of those things with my son and my friends' kids!

  4. My favorite jump rope rhyme was "Cinderella dressed in yella...". Though it wasn't a jump rope rhyme, I loved singing and clapping to "See See My Play Mate...".

  6. Hi Terri! Sweetie, I too loved summer when I was a kid. Growing up as a kid living close to the australian beaches was awesome! I lived in the water when I was young. Jumping rope was never my thing, but swimming and diving...yeah there's some great memories there! Also sweetie, you asked me about the trolly in my last post. Yes, it's just the same as what you call a shopping cart. I think it's so much fun finding out these little differences about the way we talk, don't you? Wishing you a wonderful summer day Terri!

  7. I loved Chinese jumprope when I was younger! And hopscotch! And hide -n- seek! And Red Rover! And swimming (I swear I had gills!). And kickball and running thru the sprinklers and tanning and going to the beach and riding my bike. Ahhh...that is when summer was perfect!!!

Jump rope is one of the few "athletic" things I was really good at. I don't remember the rhymes we used to sing though.

  9. Fudge, fudge, call the judge, mama's got a brand-new baby. Wrap her up in tissue paper, send her down the elevator, one...two...three...four...

    What a fun memory! :D

My sister and her husband went to the US Open last weeken in New York. It was kind of exciting for her even with all the rain. She said that she played a new golf game called "Scramble." Ever heard of it? Anyway, it's spoiled her for ever playing real golf again.

  10. This post did remind me so of summer time jump roping. My favorite rhyme with "Somebody (put in a name) and Somebody (add another name) sittin' in a tree....K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes (first name) with a baby carriage." We thought we were so cooool when we screamed that one out! I could always "jump" rope--when I would have a fairly even, slow pace to it. I hadn't done so in years, until ONE night, our aerobics teacher passed the ropes out...it took a few tries, but I got the "rhythm" back...then SHE (a stinking 30 yr old) starts doing the fast jump and rope turn of a boxer in training...I really wanted to do that, but I couldn't....she kept passing the ropes out over the next few weeks and kept trying to pretend I was Rocky as he warmed up....finally, one night, it just clicked....I was doing it....now I'm a fairly old jump roper and my younger classmates were a bit taken back at the sight of me jumping and turning the rope at a pace faster than they were going...I didn't care how foolish I looked, cuz I felt like a million....I had always wanted to do that and I was doing it!! Unfortunately, my hips and knees "spoke" to me a lot over the next couple of days...yes, that's the down side of being an Elder Jumper!! OK...I'll shut up!! :) dana
