How can you complete a degree while raising your family and still keep your sanity? Approximately 31% of all graduate students care for either their children or relatives. They face a real challenge, but luckily, it can be resolved.

You simply need a consistent daily routine, firm boundaries, and some planning. This article offers some helpful tips to balance grad school work and your family life.

Start With a Realistic Plan

Graduate studies are a lot of work, and family obligations don’t pause. Therefore, attempting to find the perfect balance can create unnecessary emotional strain.

Instead, think of a balance throughout the week. Some days are significantly more about work and less about family, while other days are predominantly about family and less about work.  The goal is to ensure that ultimately, both aspects get your attention.

Establish a Weekly System That Works

A well-organized weekly structure is vital to your overall organization. One of the simplest ways to keep control of your schedule is by using time-blocking techniques. Instead of reacting to tasks daily, you assign specific blocks of time for school work, classes, and family time.

When your calendar accurately reflects your priorities, there is less chance that work will continue into your personal time. Starting every week with a brief reset can make a difference in how you approach your week. Use this technique to do the following. 

  • Plan out assignments

  • Review deadlines

  • Prepare some meals in advance

This way, you take care of a few things before your busy week starts. You will also have a better picture of what the week will look like.

Pick a Program That Works With Your Life

There are different graduate programs, but not all of them are designed with the adult worker and parent in mind. Picking a program that supports your personal life can make the entire experience easier.

Evening classes, weekend classes, and hybrid (partially online) options will ease some of the difficulty of your daily schedule. This type of program will help you save time on commute and will allow you to have a more regular family routine. The more time you save by not commuting or having to rearrange your life, the more energy you will have to devote to both school and home.

Manage Energy as Well as You Manage Time

In addition to managing time, you must manage energy as well. For most graduate students with families, time is limited, and routines cannot be elaborate. The key is to develop small, regular habits that will increase productivity and keep you focused throughout your day.

Short, regular workouts, regular sleeping hours, and simple meals all have an effect on your ability to be productive. Digital boundaries are just as important. Notifications, emails and messages can easily disrupt your family time and your study time.

Communicate Proactively

One of the biggest mistakes that graduate students make is to wait until a problem arises and then try to find a solution after the fact. If you are going to be studying while working, a proactive conversation with your employer or supervisor before beginning studies can prevent many headaches down the road.

Streamline Your Weeknights

A weeknight doesn’t have to be complicated, and the goal is consistency over perfection. Rotating a number of easy meals can help save time by only having to think about what you are making.

It’s also a good idea to pre-make any ingredients for those meals so that it will be less stressful at the end of a long day. Having fewer decisions to make daily makes it easier to stay on track.

Understand That Balance is Temporary

This stage of life demands that you make certain trade-offs. You will most likely have less free time, fewer opportunities to go out socially, and more quickly paced schedules.

However, just because this is what your life currently looks like doesn't mean there is something wrong. It means you are dedicated to achieving your long-term goals. Most people finish grad school and raise families successfully, not because they do everything but because they do what’s important.
