What to Look for Before Choosing
Begin with your room, not your app. A bedroom may require blackout fabric and an evening routine; huge windows in the family room may require synchronization. Then proceed through four decisions:
Light and privacy: Decide on opacity, fabric and treatment style before you get lost in controls.
Power: Battery powered shades provide flexibility in an existing home when new wiring would be intrusive. Hardwired power makes sense when renovating or building new.
Controls: Determine if a remote is sufficient or if you care about app/voice controls, schedules, and smart-home integration.
Service: Measure, install, program, make adjustments after install. Larger quantity and complexity of windows increases need for this.
That directive eliminates one error people make: selecting a smart platform and then considering the window itself secondary.
1. Window Treats Inc.: Best Overall for Full-Service Motorization
Window Treats Inc. is a family owned, full service custom window treatment company located in Red Bank, NJ. They have been in business for over 30 years. The single biggest benefit this company has over others in this report is that their design, measuring, product selection, installation, motorization, and follow up service are all done in house.
Window Treats helps homeowners enjoy custom motorized window treatments, solving problems with light, privacy and daily hassles without making technology an afterthought. Window Treats provides Hunter Douglas PowerView Automation with scheduling, app and voice control. Window Treats takes care of measuring and installing.
The full-service process is the reason it leads this list.
For example, a home may have a spacious family room with high windows and bedrooms that require darker coverings for nighttime privacy. The consultation can begin with how the rooms are used, then focus down on the fabric, shade style, power method and controls prior to the final measuring appointment. Once Window Treats installs the window coverings, their team is still available to make any adjustments that may be needed, including motorization and automation adjustments.
Customers seeking a different perspective can find reviews from others on the company's public Houzz project and review page.
Best for: Homeowners in Monmouth County seeking savvy design advice, precise measuring, professional installation and monitoring, smart controls, and service that extends well past install day.
2. Budget Blinds of Long Branch: Best for Smart-Home Compatibility
Budget Blinds of Long Branch is a locally owned franchise located in Long Branch and some surrounding communities in Monmouth County. If you have a connected-home system in place already and you're looking to have window treatments connect to it, check out their selection of motorized shades.
Locally says it's possible to control your lights remotely, with wall switches, with an app, and with voice control. Alexa, Google, Apple, Control4, and Savant are among the platforms they say are compatible with. Local scheduling and scene-based control are offered as well.
Its clearest strength is ecosystem choice.
This will be helpful where lighting, entertainment, etc., are already integrated, allowing compatible blinds to participate in the same wake-up, wind-down, or media-room scene.
Budget Blinds are locally owned franchises, so make sure your home is in the service area for Long Branch.
3. Kelley's Custom Home Interiors: Best for Fabric-Led Custom Design
Kelley's Custom Home Interiors is a custom window treatment studio located in Colts Neck, offering custom fabrication workroom services. Services include custom drapery, Roman shades, motorized coverings, decorative hardware and professional installation. Motorization brands mentioned on the website include Somfy.
Option here represents the most custom fabrication/detail route.
Appeal is key when taking a design first approach, leaving the motorisation free to sit inside a beautiful tailored fabric scheme.
Take motorized Roman shades for a bedroom, paired with stationary drapery nearby. Kelley's emphasis on in-house workroom and fabric make that layered project seamless for clients who want those technologies to disappear into the design.
4. Rosen Decorators: Best for Showroom-Based Selection
Rosen Decorators offers motorized shades, custom window treatments, Hunter Douglas products, measuring, design assistance, installation & setup. Rosen Decorators has been in Morganville for years.
Its unique advantage is having an in-person showroom. Customers get to physically experience materials before purchase. This helps when unable to determine privacy level, texture, color and light filtering from a tiny sample or online photo.
Great option for homeowners who like to comparison shop before finalizing automation details.
Rosen provides larger-scale home-decor services as well. If you're looking for motorization, come in knowing how you want it controlled and what smart-home network you're using so you can hone in on what will work.
Quick Comparison
How to Choose the Right Setup
Split three things that are commonly combined. The Shade, Motor and Controller.
First determine the window's need: privacy, light filtering, blackout capabilities, view preservation, style. Second pick a power source. Battery operated can eliminate the need to wire a new window in an existing room. Hardwired runs are simpler to plan when walls are open. Finally figure out how high-end automation is beneficial. One window may only need a remote trigger, an entire room group may benefit from the app controls and scheduling. Standalone smart-shade review from Good Housekeeping treats control types and automated scheduling as key factors as well.
One additional consideration in households with small children: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises cordless window coverings when small children are in the home. Motorization can be one way to achieve a cordless operating system, depending on the product.
Final Verdict
Motorized shades work best when the technology supports the room rather than dictating it.
Budget Blinds of Long Branch should be considered for wide smart-home integration. Kelley's Custom Home Interiors excels with fabric-LED custom work and Rosen Decorators delivers the most impressive showroom experience for shoppers.
If you are a homeowner in Monmouth County looking for an organization that will assist with design, privacy, light control, measuring, installation, motorization and future repairs all under one roof, Window Treats Inc. is your best overall choice out of the businesses reviewed.
