Peanut butter sauce might sound like something destined for ice cream, brownies, or a warm slice of cake, but I started wondering what would happen if I took that creamy, nutty sauce in an entirely different direction. Peanut butter is already a familiar ingredient in savory dishes around the world, so why not use a warm peanut butter sauce as the starting point for an easy dinner?
The first combination that came to mind was shrimp and noodles. Tender shrimp, warm noodles, and creamy peanut butter sauce sound like the beginning of something delicious, especially when you add a few savory ingredients to balance the sweetness. And once I started thinking about it, I realized this simple sauce could become one of those versatile little recipes that moves easily from dessert to dinner.
Warm Peanut Butter Shrimp and Noodles
This might be my favorite way to turn warm peanut butter sauce into a meal.
Cook your favorite noodles according to the package directions. Rice noodles, ramen noodles, spaghetti, or linguine would all work beautifully. While the noodles cook, sauté peeled shrimp in a little olive or sesame oil with garlic until they are pink and cooked through.
Now comes the fun part.
Take your warm peanut butter sauce and give it a savory twist. Depending on how sweet your original sauce is, you may want to start with a smaller amount and adjust as you go. Stir in a splash of soy sauce, fresh lime juice, and a little warm water to thin the sauce to a pourable consistency. If you like heat, add red pepper flakes, chili crisp, or sriracha.
Toss the warm noodles with the sauce and top with the cooked shrimp. I would finish the bowl with sliced green onions, chopped peanuts, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.
Suddenly that sweet peanut butter sauce has become a creamy, almost satay-inspired noodle sauce.

More Ways to Turn Peanut Butter Sauce Into Dinner
Once you've made the savory version, don't stop at noodles.
Chicken Satay Bowls: Grill or sauté chicken and serve it over jasmine rice with cucumbers, shredded carrots, cabbage, green onions, and warm peanut butter sauce. A squeeze of lime just before serving brightens everything.
Peanut Chicken Lettuce Wraps: Toss chopped cooked chicken with the sauce and spoon it into crisp butter lettuce leaves. Add shredded carrots, cucumber, chopped peanuts, and cilantro. These would be especially good for a light summer dinner.
Sweet Potato and Peanut Bowls: Roast chunks of sweet potato until caramelized around the edges, then build a bowl with rice or quinoa, greens, avocado, and chickpeas. Drizzle the warm peanut sauce over everything. The sweetness of the potato and nuttiness of the sauce are natural partners.
Peanut Pork Tenderloin: Brush a less-sweet savory version of the sauce over sliced pork tenderloin or use it as a finishing sauce after roasting. Serve with rice and roasted broccoli or green beans.
Grilled Vegetable Bowls: Zucchini, peppers, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, and cauliflower can all handle a rich peanut sauce. Add rice and you've turned vegetables into a substantial meal.
Peanut Slaw: Thin the sauce with rice vinegar and lime juice and use it as a dressing for shredded cabbage, carrots, peppers, and green onions. Add shrimp or chicken and you've got dinner.
Peanut Tacos: This one sounds a little unexpected, which is exactly why I want to try it. Fill warm tortillas with grilled chicken or shrimp, crunchy cabbage, cilantro, and a drizzle of spicy peanut sauce. Finish with plenty of fresh lime.
One Sauce, Lots of Possibilities
This is exactly the kind of kitchen experiment I love. Start with something familiar, get curious about it, and suddenly one recipe has half a dozen new possibilities.
The biggest lesson I've learned is that peanut butter doesn't have to choose between sweet and savory. With a little soy sauce, lime, garlic, or heat, a warm peanut butter sauce can go from an ice cream topping to dinner in minutes.
And I think those shrimp and noodles are going to be first on my list.
