How to Protect Your Home From Storms and Harsh Weather

Storms are, whether we like it or not, a fact of life. There’s nothing you can do to prevent a storm when it’s going to hit, all we can do is batten down the hatches and try to ride it out. The most important thing is to keep safe. So, if you have warnings of a dangerous storm or weather event and there’s an evacuation order in place, it might be best to leave the area. But you can’t pick up your house and take it with you. So, how can you protect your home from storms?

Research Local Weather Patterns

When you move to a new area, one of the first things you need to know is what the local weather patterns are like and whether storms or flooding are a likely problem. This allows you to prepare properly for the problems that are most likely to happen.

While you could go for a catch-all approach and cover every possibility, this is expensive, time consuming, and unnecessary. Speak to the locals, look it up online, and pay attention to any weather alerts or warnings. This also means that, when it comes to home insurance, you can make sure you're properly insured for the mostly likely disasters.

New Doors and Windows

Another useful way to protect your home against most potential weather conditions is to invest in new doors and windows. Older doors and windows might not have appropriate seals, which means they let all the cold wind and rain right into your house.

If you invest in new doors and windows, you'll find that your house is better insulated all year round. This means that you don't get any nasty drafts and, if you have the air con on in the summer, it will keep your house nice and cool.

Most importantly, new doors and windows are less likely to get damaged even during extreme weather.

Protecting From Leaks

One common issue during storms is that your house can end up with leaks, which can in turn cause water damage. Look for areas in your home that might be more susceptible, like basements with window wells to let in light. Investing in window well covers can prevent leaks, flooding, and other potential water damage that might otherwise creep into your home.

After the Storm

It's not just before the storm that you should make sure your house is weather proof, but you also need to make sure it wasn't damaged during the harsh weather. It's especially important to check your roof because high winds can cause damage like broken or missing tiles

Over time, this damage can add up, so a minor issue that would have been easy to fix could turn into a major instability. So, get it checked out as soon as you can after a storm and, if there are any problems, hire a professional to patch up the damage. This way, you can weather the next storm with no worries.
