Beauty and Style Team Spotlight and More on Eyebrows!

Attention to eyebrows as a meaningful element of beauty and identity has deep historical roots, shifting dramatically across eras depending on cultural ideals, materials available, and even politics.

In ancient civilizations, eyebrows were already a deliberate aesthetic choice rather than an afterthought. In Ancient Egypt, both men and women emphasized brows using kohl, often darkening and extending them to create a bold, symmetrical look associated with protection and divine beauty. Meanwhile, in Ancient Greece, a connected brow, sometimes called a unibrow, was considered a sign of intelligence and purity. Women who did not naturally have one would darken the space between their brows using powdered minerals or even soot. These early practices show that brows were not just decorative, but symbolic, tied to status, intellect, and spirituality.

By the time of the European Renaissance, beauty ideals shifted in almost the opposite direction. High foreheads were prized, leading women to pluck or even shave their eyebrows entirely to create the illusion of a larger, more “refined” upper face. This preference carried into the Elizabethan era, where figures like Queen Elizabeth I popularized minimal or nearly invisible brows paired with pale skin. It wasn’t until the 20th century, particularly with the rise of Hollywood cinema, that eyebrows re-emerged as a defining facial feature. Silent film stars exaggerated thin, arched brows for expressive effect, and from there, eyebrow trends began evolving rapidly decade by decade, reflecting broader cultural attitudes toward femininity, individuality, and self-expression.
