Practical Magic Movie Night + The Curious Witch Cocktail

Some movies are made for October. Add a purple/orange cocktail, a cozy blanket, and a little curiosity, and you've got yourself a magical evening.

Every October, I find myself drawn to certain movies that capture the feeling of the season. Not necessarily the scary ones, although I enjoy a good Halloween story, but the movies that make autumn feel mysterious, romantic, and just a little magical.

And for me, Practical Magic, the original 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is one of those films.

There's something about the Owens sisters, their extraordinary family home, their eccentric aunts, and their complicated relationship with magic that makes me want to settle in for a cozy movie night.

Add a candle or two, a comfortable throw, and a delicious cocktail, and I'm perfectly happy to stay home.

This year, I decided our movie night needed a special drink.

Meet The Curious Witch, a beautiful purple cocktail with blackberry, lemon, and a little sparkle. I think the Owens sisters would approve.

Why I Still Love the Original Practical Magic

If you haven't watched Practical Magic in a while, consider this your invitation to revisit it.

Sandra Bullock plays Sally Owens, who longs for an ordinary life, while Nicole Kidman plays her free-spirited sister, Gillian. Raised by their wonderfully unconventional aunts, the sisters grow up surrounded by spells, superstitions, and a family history that makes falling in love a complicated business.

But what I love most about this movie isn't really the magic.

It's the relationship between the sisters.

They have different personalities, different dreams, and different ways of navigating the world. Yet underneath all their disagreements and adventures is a bond that refuses to disappear.

And then there's that magnificent house!

The sprawling Victorian home, with its charming kitchen, gardens, and mysterious atmosphere, feels like a character in its own right. I could happily spend an afternoon exploring every room.

Practical Magic has all the ingredients of a favorite autumn movie: romance, humor, a little darkness, memorable characters, and a reminder that love and friendship are powerful forces.

It also makes me think about the traditions we create and pass along, especially those centered around gathering together.

A Little Magic in the Kitchen

One of my favorite things about the movie is the way the Owens family makes the unusual feel perfectly ordinary.

Their kitchen is a place for conversation, laughter, secrets, and, of course, a little magic.

Who can forget the wonderfully chaotic midnight margarita scene?

That scene always makes me smile. There's something delightful about women gathering in the kitchen, throwing caution to the wind, and celebrating being together.

I decided to borrow that spirit for my own Halloween entertaining.

Instead of margaritas, we're making something purple, mysterious, and just a little mischievous.

Introducing the Curious Witch Cocktail

The Curious Witch is a cocktail I created for a Halloween gathering, inspired by my love of seasonal entertaining and my 2026 word of the year, Curiosity.

I wanted a drink that looked like a magical potion but tasted bright, fruity, and refreshing.

The combination of vodka, Chambord, purple grape juice, and fresh lemon creates a beautiful jewel-toned cocktail. A splash of club soda adds a little fizz, while blackberries and rosemary give it a wonderfully witchy finishing touch.

And here's my favorite detail: the rosemary sprig looks like a tiny witch's broom when paired with a blackberry skewer.

It's whimsical without being overly complicated, which is exactly how I like to entertain.

The Curious Witch Cocktail

Servings: 1 cocktail
Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1½ ounces vodka

  • ½ ounce Chambord or blackberry liqueur

  • 1 ounce purple grape juice

  • ½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 1–2 ounces club soda

  • ¼ ounce simple syrup, optional, for additional sweetness

  • Ice

  • 3 fresh blackberries, for garnish

  • 1 small sprig fresh rosemary, for garnish

  • Purple or black cocktail sugar, optional, for the rim

  • Drink-safe edible glitter, optional

Instructions

  1. If desired, rub a lemon wedge around half the rim of your cocktail glass and dip it into purple or black cocktail sugar.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

  3. Add the vodka, Chambord, purple grape juice, and lemon juice. Add the optional simple syrup if you prefer a sweeter cocktail.

  4. Shake until well chilled.

  5. Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice.

  6. Top with 1–2 ounces of club soda and stir gently.

  7. Thread three blackberries onto a cocktail pick and place them across the glass.

  8. Add the rosemary sprig upright beside the berries to resemble a miniature witch's broom.

  9. For extra Halloween magic, add a tiny pinch of drink-safe edible glitter.

Gia's Tip: For the prettiest presentation, use a clear glass so the rich purple color shines through. The rosemary adds a lovely herbal aroma as you sip, and the blackberry garnish makes the drink feel special enough for a Halloween party.

Why This Cocktail Works

The Curious Witch has just the right balance of sweet and tart.

The Chambord brings rich berry flavor, while the grape juice deepens the purple color. Fresh lemon keeps the drink from becoming too sweet, and club soda makes everything light and refreshing.

It's an easy cocktail to prepare individually, but you can also mix the vodka, liqueur, juice, and lemon ahead of time for a small gathering. Keep the mixture chilled, then add the club soda and garnishes just before serving.

And while I created it with Halloween in mind, I think it would be lovely for any autumn gathering that could use a little mystery.

How to Host a Practical Magic Movie Night

You don't need elaborate decorations to create a magical atmosphere.

In fact, I think a Practical Magic evening is best when it feels comfortable, welcoming, and just a little mysterious.

Start with soft lighting. A few candles, warm lamps, and perhaps a string of tiny lights will give the room a cozy glow.

Bring in some natural elements, too. I love the idea of decorating with rosemary, sage, dried flowers, little pumpkins, and amber-colored glass bottles.

A few mismatched vintage glasses would be perfect for serving our Curious Witch cocktails.

For snacks, I'd keep things simple: a beautiful cheese board, warm popcorn, roasted nuts, and perhaps a little dark chocolate.

And, of course, everyone needs a cozy place to sit.

The idea isn't to create an elaborate Halloween production. It's to make an ordinary evening feel like something worth celebrating.

What Practical Magic Reminds Me About Being a Woman

The older I get, the more I appreciate stories about women who are learning to be themselves.

Sally and Gillian spend much of the movie trying to figure out where they belong. One wants a normal life, while the other seems determined to experience everything the world has to offer.

Both are searching for love, acceptance, and a place where they can be completely themselves.

That feels surprisingly relatable.

I've spent much of this year thinking about curiosity and what it means to remain open to new experiences as we grow older.

Sometimes curiosity takes me somewhere new. Sometimes it leads me to try an unfamiliar recipe or experiment with a watercolor painting.

And sometimes it means revisiting an old movie and discovering that I appreciate it differently than I did years ago.

Maybe that's a little kind of magic, too.

Here's to a Little Practical Magic

I don't believe we need spells or potions to make life magical.

Sometimes the magic is in the ordinary things: gathering with friends, sharing a laugh, watching a favorite movie, or making something delicious in the kitchen.

The original Practical Magic reminds me that love, friendship, and family traditions are worth celebrating.

And our Curious Witch Cocktail?

Well, that's simply a delicious excuse to raise a glass to all of it.

So put on your favorite cozy sweater, light a candle, invite a friend, and revisit the Owens sisters.

A little curiosity, a little laughter, and a little practical magic might be exactly what your October needs.

Let's Talk!

Are you a fan of the original Practical Magic? And if you could spend one evening in the Owens sisters' magical house, would you head straight for the kitchen, explore the garden, or settle in for a midnight cocktail?

I'd love to know!
