A Closer Look at Carnival Spirit: Our Home Away from Home in Alaska

When people think about an Alaskan cruise, it's easy to focus on the ports of call—the glaciers, whales, mountain towns, and breathtaking scenery.

But for seven wonderful days, another destination became just as memorable: the Carnival Spirit herself.

She wasn't simply our transportation from one incredible port to the next. She became our floating hotel, our favorite restaurant, our art studio, our theater, our coffee stop, and the perfect place to watch Alaska drift by one breathtaking mile at a time.

A Ship with Personality

One of the first things you'll notice about the Carnival Spirit is her personality.

The décor is bold, colorful, whimsical, and sometimes delightfully unexpected. Every deck seems to reveal another interesting sculpture, artistic detail, or cozy nook waiting to be discovered. I found myself wandering simply to see what was around the next corner.  The whimsical decor included a larger than life sized Neptune in the main dining area, King Tut in the entertainment venue and a sliding roof that went from Deck 2 all the way to the very top!  It bathed the ship in pink light, so beautiful!

Unlike some newer ships that lean toward sleek minimalism, the Spirit embraces fun. She doesn't take herself too seriously, and I think that's part of her charm.

The Soul Gallery

One of my favorite discoveries aboard the ship was The Soul Gallery.

Carnival Spirit is currently the only ship in the Carnival fleet to offer complimentary art classes, and naturally, I couldn't resist signing up.

During our cruise, I painted the Northern Lights, inspired by the incredible landscape surrounding us. Sitting in a quiet studio, paintbrush in hand, while sailing through Alaska felt almost magical. It wasn't just another cruise activity—it became one of my favorite memories of the week.

I came home with more than a painting.

I came home with a reminder that creativity travels beautifully.

Our Favorite Place on the Ship

Every traveler eventually discovers "their spot."

Ours became The Jungle.

Tucked away from the busier areas of the ship, this peaceful space features enormous round windows that frame the Alaskan scenery like living works of art.

It quickly became our sanctuary.

Sometimes we brought a book.

Sometimes we simply watched the waves.

Sometimes we sat in comfortable silence, coffee in hand, as glaciers, forests, and mist-covered mountains drifted past.

It was one of those places where time seemed to slow down.

Food Around Every Corner

One thing you certainly won't do aboard Carnival Spirit is go hungry.

Some afternoons called for a perfectly grilled burger from Guy's Burger Joint, while other days we found ourselves stopping for sushi before an evening show. The ship offered something for every mood—from casual poolside bites to elegant multi-course dinners.

And yes...

Ice cream always seemed to be just around the corner.

Let's just say I became quite familiar with the soft-serve machine.

Dinner Became an Event

Every evening, we looked forward to dinner in the ship's main dining room.

There was something comforting about returning each night to friendly servers, beautifully presented meals, and conversations about everything we'd experienced during the day.

One evening we treated ourselves to The Steakhouse, and it was absolutely worth it. Beautifully prepared steaks, impeccable service, and an atmosphere that made the evening feel like a celebration.

Those dinners became a lovely way to close each day of our adventure.

Evenings Filled with Entertainment

When the sun finally dipped behind the mountains, Carnival Spirit came alive in a different way.

Live music drifted through the lounges, theaters filled with laughter and applause, and every evening offered another opportunity to enjoy talented performers.

Some nights we dressed up.

Some nights we wandered with cocktails in hand, listening to music and soaking in the atmosphere.

There was always something happening—but never any pressure to do it all.

Raising a Glass to Alaska

One of the simple pleasures of cruising is lingering over a cocktail while watching the world glide by.

Whether relaxing before dinner or unwinding after a day ashore, we found ourselves slowing down and savoring those quiet moments as much as the scheduled activities.

Sometimes the best entertainment was simply the view from our balcony.

More Than a Cruise Ship

As wonderful as Alaska was—and it truly was spectacular—I realized something unexpected before the week was over.

The Carnival Spirit had become part of the destination.

She carried us through some of the most beautiful scenery on earth while giving us places to create, read, laugh, dine, relax, and simply be together.

When I think back on this trip, I won't just remember glaciers and whales.

I'll remember painting the Northern Lights.

Reading in The Jungle.

Lingering over dinner.

Enjoying an ice cream cone while watching mountains drift by.

And realizing that sometimes the journey itself becomes every bit as memorable as the places you visit.

Travel with Curiosity

Every ship has its hidden corners. Don't spend your entire cruise following the daily schedule. Wander. Open the door marked "Library." Sit in the quiet lounge with the oversized windows. Sign up for the class you hadn't planned to take. Those unexpected discoveries often become your favorite memories.

From My Reading Chair

One afternoon, tucked into one of those giant round window seats with my book and a cup of coffee, I realized something: travel isn't only about seeing new places. It's also about finding new ways to spend an ordinary afternoon. Reading while glaciers passed by outside the window reminded me that joy often lives in the quietest moments.
