Cruising Through Alaska: A Journey of Wonder, Curiosity, and Unforgettable Moments

The Carnival Spirit proved to be a wonderful home for our adventure. The ship has a personality all its own, with whimsical décor, dramatic architecture, and cozy spaces to read, relax, and simply watch the scenery drift by. Whether enjoying a quiet morning coffee on our balcony or watching the evening entertainment, the Spirit made every day feel like part of the vacation.

Our itinerary took us through some of Alaska's most iconic destinations, each with its own unique charm.

Endicott Arm Fjord

Our first unforgettable experience wasn't actually a port at all—it was sailing through Endicott Arm Fjord. Towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, floating icebergs, and the magnificent Dawes Glacier created one of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever witnessed. It was impossible to capture in photographs. I spent much of the morning on our balcony with a cup of coffee, my sketchbook, and my current book, simply soaking in the quiet majesty of Alaska.

Skagway

Skagway transported us back to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. Instead of simply walking the main street, I followed a personalized itinerary (with a little help from ChatGPT!) that included independent bookstores, local shops, historic buildings, and even a fun scavenger hunt that encouraged me to slow down and notice the details. It turned an already charming town into one of my favorite memories of the trip.

Juneau

Juneau surprised me in so many ways. Accessible only by air or sea, Alaska's capital is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and abundant wildlife. We watched whales, admired waterfalls, enjoyed a traditional salmon bake, and found ourselves continually stopping to admire the scenery. Juneau perfectly balances outdoor adventure with small-town charm.

Ketchikan

Known as Alaska's "First City," Ketchikan welcomed us with colorful buildings, bubbling creeks, totem poles, and delicious seafood. We wandered through unique shops, discovered a wonderful independent bookstore, sampled fresh Dungeness crab, and yes... even tried a salmon doughnut! Ketchikan quickly became one of those places that feels both quirky and unforgettable.

Victoria, British Columbia

Our final stop brought us to beautiful Victoria. Even with only a few hours ashore, we found elegant gardens, historic architecture, waterfront walks, and lovely cafés. It was the perfect ending to a journey filled with natural beauty and warm hospitality.

Traveling with Curiosity

One of the unexpected highlights of this cruise was traveling with curiosity as my guide. Before each port, I used ChatGPT to help create personalized scavenger hunts that encouraged me to look beyond the obvious attractions. Instead of simply checking sights off a list, I searched for hidden gardens, historic signs, colorful doors, interesting architecture, local bookstores, public art, and quiet corners that many visitors probably walked right past. Those little discoveries often became my favorite memories.

Books That Traveled With Me

No trip feels complete without a few good books tucked into my suitcase. Some mornings began with coffee on the balcony and a chapter before the day's adventures, while quiet evenings offered time to reflect on both the stories I was reading and the incredible places we had explored. Several books accompanied me throughout the voyage, each adding its own perspective to the journey. Alaska gave me far more than beautiful photographs. It reminded me to slow down, notice the details, embrace curiosity, and leave room for wonder. Those are souvenirs that won't fit in a suitcase—but they're the ones I'll treasure the longest.
