After two failed attempts to get the 2022 camping season underway (two rainouts, back to back) we were able to get a quick weekend away to Pomme de Terre State Park. And WOW, it was absolutely amazing– I loved every single moment.
Pomme de Terre State Park is located in the southwest part of the state, about 3 hours from the Saint Louis area where we live. There are campgrounds in two locations on the lake, one on the Pittsburg side and the other in Hermitage. The park includes a full-service marina and boat ramps to launch boats etc for water sports, two public swimming beaches, two hiking trails, 240 campsites with a dump station on-site, yurts, cabins, and a lake house. Something for everyone!
I think that's what made it so special. It was something that everyone could enjoy regardless of age, gender, etc. I can't recommend it enough.
Camping in Pomme de Terre State Park, Missouri
During our stay in Pomme de Terre State Park, we stayed on the Pittsburg side of the lake, enjoying the large electric sites, lots of trees, wildflowers, and beautiful sunsets. Our site wasn't as close to the full-service restrooms as we like, so we brought along a porta-potty just in case. We weren't too far from the lake, but we had to walk to see the lake. We considered the Pittsburg campground to be clean and the bathrooms reasonably so.
As usual, we cooked several of our meals but we did eat out once, at a place called The Crappie Hole. Now before you think this is a Crappie restaurant, it isn't. The only fish served here was catfish, which was delicious, as was everything we tried on the menu. Our favorite was the fried mushrooms, which our waitress said were made fresh daily. They were incredible. Even now I'm home, I still think about them. I know I'll be drooling over them for years to come.
We spent time at the Marina on the Lake. I found it to be charming and well-stocked. The store had basic camping needs plus a line of cute tees with a sweet logo that I loved. There were several flavors of hand-scooped ice cream to choose from, a decent breakfast and lunch menu, plus a quaint outdoor bar. We came back for biscuits and gravy for our breakfast on our way back home and they were delicious! I can't rate this little spot enough. It was so quaint and full of character.
We plan to come back next year and rent a boat, eat at The Crappie Hole, have breakfast at the marina, and maybe stay in a yurt or the lake house! Lots of fun to be had at this quiet park in the Missouri Parks system for the whole family.
Pomme de Terre State Park Cabins
The Pomme de Terre State Park offers a large variety of great accommodation options to suit all of the different preferences, budgets, and group sizes. Find out more about these options below:
Camper Cabins
Installed in 2020, these cabins can accommodate up to four adults and two children. They are fully equipped with electricity, heating, air conditioning, a queen bed, two single bunks, and a fold-out couch. Amenities include a microwave, coffee pot, and full-size refrigerator. Guests are required to bring their own bedding, though which I can understand is a bit of a pain.
Full-Service Marina Cabin
Located on the Pittsburg side of the park, this premium cabin sleeps up to six people. It includes a bedroom with a queen bed, a loft area with two twin beds, a full kitchen, and a bathroom. Bedding, towels, and most kitchen supplies are provided for convenience for guests. I think this is a great option for getaways with friends or your family.
Pomme de Terre Lake House
The park also offers a full-service lake house, providing another comfortable lodging option for visitors. The view looks absolutely beautiful online, and it's definitely on my bucket list to come back and stay here.
These accommodation options provide a comfortable and convenient way to enjoy the natural beauty of Pomme de Terre State Park. I love the huge variety of options that make it easy for every person to find their place and at an affordable price here.
