Top Mistakes People Make When Choosing a Moving Company

Choosing a moving company is one of those decisions you shouldn't rush. It's an important choice, and the company you end up going with will play a huge part in your moving process and how well things go on the day. The wrong company can cause more problems than they're worth, and you'll still end up paying for the experience.

If you want to remove the risk of choosing the wrong moving company, we have some mistakes people often make.

Focusing on price, not scope

One of the most common mistakes when picking movers is choosing them based on price, not the scope of the work in each package.

Cheap quotes look attractive, sure, but they often have things missing or changed to make the price more appealing. Or worse, you incur extra charges on the day you weren't aware of.

Instead of going on price alone, take the time to look at exactly what's included in all the quotes you get. Reliable quotes from legitimate movers will detail what's included, what isn't, and how changes are handled, as well as details of extra costs that could come into play after the quote.

Not understanding the quote

Again, the quote can show you exactly what you're getting for the price, but if you don't understand it, it won't really matter. And people often find that going into a contract with a moving company without understanding the quote or terms leads to them being out of pocket or without the service they thought they were getting.

Take the time to read the quote thoroughly and question anything you don't understand so you know what you're getting.

Ignoring access and property constraints

You might not think movers need to know this, but they do. If you don't discuss with them what to expect when they turn up for the job, you might find yourself without the help you were expecting.

Assuming movers will figure it out on the day or just do it because they're there, but this isn't always the case. When making your enquiries, tell them about the access to both properties, the floor they're moving you from, if there's elevator access or not, etc. The more they know, the more accurate the quote, and there are no assumptions being made, and all parties know what to expect upfront.

Overlooking experience

It's important to understand the relevance of the experience moving companies have for situations like yours. This is especially important for commercial moves or if you have oversized equipment or medical equipment, for example. Are you moving antiques or fragile items? Does the company have experience moving items like this, and do they offer explicit support for it? Are they experts in above-ground apartment moves, or do they specialise in moving people to college dorms or into manned buildings? All experience is relevant if it matches your needs and should be a factor in your decisions.

Not checking credibility and insurance

A huge mistake that people often overlook is the credibility of the moving company and whether or not they have good reviews and the appropriate insurance. If anything is to go wrong, you want to know you and your belongings are covered, and you'll be fairly compensated.

Check reviews on their websites and third-party sites, check social media, and when you obtain a quote, ask for any licensing details they have, registrations, and insurance details too.
