Seasons of Skin Care and the Beauty and Style Support Team

My Skin Doesn't Need Fixing. It Needs Listening To.

For years, beauty advertising taught women my age to look in the mirror and search for something to correct. Wrinkles. Dryness. Uneven texture. Sagging. Somewhere along the way, I decided I didn't want my morning routine to begin with a list of things that were supposedly wrong with my face. I would rather ask a different question: What does my skin need from me today? Sometimes the answer is more moisture. Sometimes it's a little extra attention around my eyes or neck. And sometimes my skin is perfectly happy with a simple cleanse, moisturizer, sunscreen, and a little makeup.

That has become an important part of what I think of as my Gia Beauty Routine. I'm not trying to recreate the skin I had decades ago. I'm taking good care of the skin that has accompanied me through all those decades. I cleanse gently, moisturize generously when my skin asks for it, pay attention to my eyes and neck, and protect my skin during the day. Then I add makeup, jewelry, and clothes that make me feel pulled together, even if I'm spending the day at home. These aren't things I do because I'm afraid of looking older. They're small rituals that remind me that taking care of myself is still worth my time.

My Beauty Routine Has Seasons, Too

I've learned that my skincare routine shouldn't be exactly the same in January as it is in July. Missouri winters bring cold air outside and dry heat inside, and that's when I appreciate a richer moisturizer and sometimes an extra layer on the driest areas of my face. In the heat and humidity of summer, I can use that same richer cream more selectively, perhaps at night or just where I need it. Instead of following a rigid routine, I'm learning to pay attention and adjust.

And maybe that's one of the gifts of getting older: I know myself better. I don't need a twelve-step routine simply because someone on social media tells me I do. I want products that earn their place on my bathroom counter and rituals that make me feel cared for rather than overwhelmed. My goal isn't perfection. It's healthy, comfortable skin and a few minutes each day devoted entirely to taking care of the woman looking back at me in the mirror.
