Red White and Blue for Your Home

How many of you actually decorate using red, white and blue?  It is my go-to decorating scheme from May 15 to July 15.  I'm usually very ready for something new by July!  I started thinking about when Americans started decorating with red, white and blue and did a little research.  Here's what I found.

How early were Americans using red, white and blue as decorations?  Memorial Day kicks off six weeks of holidays ending with the Fourth of July.  Started three years after the end of the Civil War, it was designed to decorate the graves of veterans (sometimes called Decoration Day).  It was originally at the beginning of May but moved to the end of May to be sure that some kind of flower was blooming all over the United States.  Maybe this was the start of red, white and blue?

Our next holiday, Flag Day, was started in 1916 as a way to commerate the day the flag was officially adopted by the Continental Congress.  Maybe that is when American's started putting out flags, banners and buntings?

And then there's the Fourth of July, with hot dogs, baseball, fireworks and watermelon, family traditions, parades and so much more!  It's the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking our 240th anniversary this year!  Maybe as early as the 1780s!
Regardless of when red, white and blue started being a part of the American decor scene, be sure to check out these gorgeous patriotic decor ideas from the bloggers below.  Such fun stuff and mostly easy to make!  Which of these would you like to make?

  2. I admit it... I never decorate red, white or blue. However, this is giving me a lot more inspiration and loving the other bloggers ideas too! Maybe I'll try making a wreath this year. :)
