Bedroom Essentials for Growing Kids

Time flies when you’re a parent, and before you know it, you’re swapping cribs for beds and looking at color profiles and accessories that are suited to growing kids rather than tiny bundles. If you’re looking to revamp your nursery, or you have children approaching their teenage years, and you’re looking for tips, here are some bedroom essentials to help you achieve a transformation your kids will love.

A new bed

Children grow very quickly, and as they get bigger, you’ll need to upgrade their sleeping quarters. From a crib to a small bed to a full-size bed, there’s a huge range of options available. If you’re short on space, look for beds that offer additional features to enhance versatility, for example, bunk beds, beds with storage underneath, and beds with desks and shelves to work. You could also add a fun accessory like a slide if you’re combining a bedroom and a playroom. Browse home stores, look for inspiration online, and think about how much space you have available, and how long you want the bed to last. That bed with a slide, for example, may lose its novelty quickly. It’s always a good idea to compare prices online before you buy to get the best deal.

If you are upgrading the bed, it’s always a good idea to upgrade the rest of the room, too! This way, your children will have matching bedroom furniture that can grow with them. When they age, you can change the room’s decorations to create a more mature look, or let your children decorate themselves! Look for American-made bedroom sets and opt for high-quality materials wherever you can.

Chill out area

Bedrooms are designed for winding down and sleeping, so it’s hugely beneficial to incorporate an area where your kids can kick back and chill out. Create a calming, soothing space using oversized floor cushions, throws, chairs, and beanbags. You can find options that are cheaper compared to a Lovesac online, and they are perfect for little ones and older children. Place a bookshelf in this area, add low-level lighting, and try and avoid technology. This should be an area where children can relax, read, listen to music or just enjoy a bit of peace and quiet after a long day at school or before they go to bed.

Storage

It’s no secret that kids have a lot of stuff, so storage is crucial. Make use of wall space with mounted units and use chests, crates, and tubs to store clothes, toys, and shoes. If you’ve got a closet attached to the room, take full advantage of this. Even if the room is small, you can maximize storage by hanging pegs on the back of the door or adding racks and shelves to the walls. Beds that have hidden storage under the mattress or drawers under the frame are a great option for smaller bedrooms.

Accessories

Once you’ve got all the essentials, you can turn your attention to the finishing touches and incorporate colors and themes. Use your child’s interests and hobbies as a source of inspiration. From animals, nature, space, and sport, to fantasy, music, and superheroes, it’s possible to create a unique room using accessories, soft furnishings, and wall art.

If your kids are on the verge of growing out of their room, hopefully, this guide has given you some ideas and inspiration. Whether you’re upgrading a nursery for a toddler on the go, or you’re designing a cool, functional room for teens, you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve amazing results.

  13. My kids always seemed to love their bedrooms, even though they weren't nearly as cool as these ones. I preferred for them to do their homework downstairs so I could supervise. However, they would have had a lot of fun playing and drawing with desks like the ones in the top photo.
