What a lot of people forget about clearing out your home is that it’s harder than it sounds! Really, it can turn into a huge mess with just a few wrong moves!
You have to approach it like a game of Tetris, where you need to carefully fit pieces together to clear lines and free up the space.
And knowing what’ll make a clear out job more difficult is half the battle. As such, here are the most difficult parts of having a clear out; make sure you’re ready to face them head on!
Finding the Time!
A clear out is not an ‘hour and done’ kind of job. You’re going to need plenty of time to commit here, otherwise nothing is really going to get shifted.
We recommend splitting the work across at least two different days, which makes a weekend ideal. But in truth, you’re more likely to need upwards of three to four days to really make a dent in what’s clogging up your cupboards.
Having Enough ‘Interim’ Space
A clear out is one part throwing things away and two parts working out what you're going to do with the rest. And if you’re pulling things out all at once, you’re going to end up with a bombzone in the middle of the living room as you mull this over.
You can’t just put things back, because they need sorting. But also, you’re running out of space!
This interim zone is where the bulk of the job occurs. You’ve got your sort piles set up, you have a vague idea of what you want to keep and what can be donated, but there’s also a load of old clothes, junk, and furniture all mashed up into one on top!
This is impossible to sort through, and it’s going to make your clear out ten times harder than it needs to be. Make sure you’ve got either a self storage container set up, or that you’re able to use your garage or shed as a temporary storage zone.
Being as Ruthless as You Need to Be
Let’s face it, the main problem of any and all clear outs is not being ruthless enough. You hold onto things ‘just in case’, or because you feel like you can’t get rid of them.
Whether it’s an item with a memory attached to it, or some crafting supplies you never used but still might get around to one day, it all goes back into place.
And in the long run, nothing changes! You’re still as unhappy with the level of clutter in your home as ever. So maybe this time round, getting more ruthless with yourself is what you need?
Ignore the feeling that comes up; if you want to throw it away, and have been wanting to every single time you’ve tried to clear it out, finally take that plunge.
A proper clear out makes a real difference to your home! But they’re challenging jobs too!
