Friday Faves #4

We had a crazy good time at the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend, celebrating my mom's 80th birthday. Her birthday isn't until July 13, but all of us could get together at this time, and we took advantage of that.

Our neighborhood has an annual Fourth of July parade and fireworks show on the Fourth. Neighbors have get togethers and all have a great time celebrating our nation's birthday.  This year the fireworks were across the street from my house, so we had a great view.  I made up a couple of pitchers of my Front Porch Sippers and shared them with neighbors who came by.  Refreshing and delicious!

I am ready to share with you my favorites for the week!

1.  I read two books on Atomic City this week. Both are for book clubs I am in.  The first one was The Atomic City Girls, a Novel by Janet Beard.  It is a fictional book based off the historical event of Atomic City.  In case you didn't know, Atomic City was a government built city where secretly, even from the workers, the armed forces built the atomic bomb.  Riveting story.  Then I read The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II by Denise Kiernan. This is a nonfiction book about the real women who worked there. I'm not quite done with this book but I can't put it down!

2.  It's not news, but I just had my first Starbucks Cold Foam Iced Coffee. Oh heavens, that cold foam is amazing, and it is made with nonfat milk!  They serve it up in a cup with a special lid, so that you get cold foam as part of each drink. I am not a true coffee drinker, so I get it made with light ice, 1 shot of coffee, the rest is milk and cold foam.  It makes the perfect low calorie (60) afternoon drink!

3.  I am a big fan of summer storms.  When I was a little girl, my dad would let me watch them with him on our back porch. Once we watched softball sized hail fall from the sky.  My sister ran out and grabbed a few, barely missing getting bonked in the head!  Forward a few decades, and watch the wind blow the water on the lake! (the video is just a few seconds long)

4.  Lastly, make time for your girlfriends!  I lived in another city for 20 years before moving to St. Louis in 2012.  I made a trip to my former city and caught up with a few girlfriends. My heart always feels so much better when I do!  This is a key lime pie martini, a favorite of the friends I met up with!

What are your weekend plans?  We are headed to my home town to visit and participate in some festivities.  Then we are going to a Styx and Joan Jett concert!  Have a lovely weekend, friends!
