Planting a Dish Cactus Garden

Planting a dish cactus garden is easy, fun and quick! As a girl who has lived her entire life in the midwest, I never thought I would be so in love with cacti! This spring my family vacationed in Arizona and I absolutely fell for these majestic plants. I'll be sharing some of my favorite cacti pictures with you, too!

Since this is a Pinterest Challenge, I wanted you to know that I was inspired by Nell from Joy Us Gardens to create my garden. She has a special tip for keeping the needles out of your hands, but you will have to go to her site to find out what it is!

Dish Cactus Garden

How to make a dish cactus garden.
prep time: 15 Mperform time: 20 Mtotal time: 35 M

materials:

  • 1 dish of your choice
  • 3-4 small cactus plants
  • potting soil
  • smaller rocks
  • medium sized decorative rocks

tools:

  • scoop
  • garden gloves

steps:

  1. Pull on gloves. Don't miss this step, cactus have needles!
  2. Choose your dish.  My dish is about 8 inches square and three inches deep.
  3. Fill the bottom with small rocks (not pea gravel) about an inch high. Make sure you have a drainage hole, and if not, add one using a drill bit (get directions to how to make a hole in a pot from Google)
  4. Add about two inches of soil with the scoop.
  5. Create a hole in the soil where you want to add the first plant large enough to hold the root system.
  6. Cover the roots with soil and proceed with the next plants.
  7. Add more soil to the top of the dish.
  8. Add larger, decorative rocks. This will help keep the soil in the dish.
  9. Water once thorough, then water when the dish is dry.

NOTES:

Cactus do like the heat, but you may need to check the soil for watering since these are baby cactus.

  30. Very clever of you to not spill Nells secret. This way you not only give her credit for your inspiration but also gift her with some page views and comments (I made sure to leave her a note!). You might want to let the link open in a new window, though. You don't want to loose your visitors right after the second paragraph. I love how your little cacti dish turned out and your vacation photos are stunning. I think I would enjoy a trip to Arizona one day, too!
