4 Interior Painting Tips That Can Transform Any Room

Whether you’re renovating your house or you just want to update the look of it, painting is a great way to transform almost any room, and you can often get it done in just a weekend!

There are so many advantages to painting your home’s interior. Not only can it help to bring out more of your personality and sense of style, but painting with the right colors can actually end up increasing your home’s value if you ever decide to sell it.

For some people, though, painting a room can seem daunting, especially if you’ve never done it by yourself.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be. Keep these helpful tips in mind to tackle your next painting project, and by the end of it, you’ll be able to stand back and enjoy the fresh new look of your space.

1. Use the Right Materials

A good paint job starts with good products and materials. Choosing high-quality products like Zinsser paint, and brushes with bristles that won’t fall off during the job can make a big difference in the ease of the project.

If you’re going to make the effort to invest in good materials, make sure you treat them the right way while you’re painting, too. For example, don’t leave your can of paint open while you’re working. That can cause the paint to dry out, and it also opens up the risk of dirt and debris falling into it.

If you take a break from the job, rinse out your brushes and thoroughly dry them so they don’t get paint stuck in the bristles.
2. Wait for the Right Weather

The best-laid plans sometimes don’t work out. If you had planned on painting this weekend, but it’s a rainy Saturday morning, you’ll be better off waiting until you get a dry day in the forecast. When it’s humid and wet outside, your paint will have a tendency to drip and it won’t dry as quickly. So, you’re more likely to see marks on your walls if you don’t catch every drip, and you’ll have to avoid that room for a longer period of time.
3. Prep Your Room Beforehand

If you live in an older house, you might notice peeling or some cracking on your walls. That’s normal as a house ages and settles, but it’s not ideal for painting. Do a visual inspection of your room before you begin, and carefully sand or scrape away any imperfections in the wall. Then, that area will need to be washed and dried before you apply any paint, so no dust or debris gets onto your brush or roller.
4. Go From Top to Bottom

Some people think you don’t have to have a specific pattern or “layout” when you paint a room, but you’ll find it’s a much easier and better-looking experience if you paint from the top of the room to the bottom. Using a roller with a handle and going from the top down will help to reduce the number of drips you get and lower the chances of seeing streaks from your paint job.

With the right paint, the right tools for the job, and a little bit of know-how, you really can transform a room in a matter of hours. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and give your home interior a facelift!
