How to Plan a Good Hike That You’ll Remember

A great hike doesn’t happen by accident. It takes some planning, preparation and a good mindset. The best outdoor adventures are ones where you know roughly what the plan is, you know you are going to be safe, and you are curious about the journey ahead. Whether you are going for a small countryside walk or a full-day mountain trek, knowing how to put together a good plan and make the difference between an unforgettable experience and a dangerous mistake.

Start with the right trail

The first step in planning a successful hike is choosing a route that matches your fitness level and experience. Many beginners make the mistake of picking a walking route that is based on Instagram and trends they see online. However, people don’t often share everything online, so while it might look peaceful, it might be unpredictable or involve risky terrain.

It is important that you conduct research as part of your preparation, especially for a walk when you are on vacation. This includes weather conditions, distance, terrain, elevation gain, estimated completion time, and trail difficulty based on reviews. Do this before you head out, so you can pack accordingly, but also so you can have the information you need offline, as you don’t always get a signal. It will ensure that you pick a route suitable for everyone who is going, especially if they are of different levels.

Check the weather again before you leave

Weather plays a massive role in hiking safety and enjoyment. A mild morning can turn into heavy rain, strong winds and bad temperatures very quickly and without warning. While you might check it a few days before, you want to make sure that you also check on the day of the hike, and use hiking weather applications to check. If you are going up a mountain, check the forecast for the specific mountain, not just the local area, as the conditions up on the mountain will be different the higher you go.

It is important that you are aware of risks and dangerous conditions. There is no shame in changing or postponing plans when it comes to safety.

Pack the hiking essentials

Your hiking kit is really important and something not many people think about. Many make the mistake of just packing a snack bar and a bottle of water, but you have to pack more than that. Firstly, your body will need a lot of fuel and water for the strenuous activity you are going to do, especially if it is a long walk. On the other hand, you don’t want to make the mistake of overpacking and making a long walk uncomfortable. Carry enough water for the full route, high-energy snacks, a basic first aid kit, a physical map, weather-appropriate layers, and flashlights in case you get lost or are still out when it gets dark. It is always important to pack in case there is an emergency.

A good hike isn’t just about reaching the finish line. It is about enjoying the environment and having the peace of mind that you are prepared for anything, so you can fully surrender and enjoy the walk.
