Tidewater Bride #ourgoodlifebooklist

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC guidelines.

Tidewater Bride by Laura Frantz is a historical romance set in Virginia Colony in the 1600s. Selah Hopewell has been charged with managing the Tobacco Brides who have come to James Towne for that exact purpose. The main character, Xander Renick, is a widower entirely unwilling to remarry even if he is the most eligible bachelor in Virginia.

This is a fictional story based on the true story of Pocahontas. but names have been changed. Much of the story comes from John Rolfe and his second marriage, after Pocahontas’s death. Xander, based on John Rolfe, is a peace mediator between the Virginians and the Powhatans. The tribe offers a "peace child" exchange and Selah's brother goes to live with the Powhatans while a girl child comes to live with Selah's family.

When I finished the book, I was pleased with how the author handled the story of Pocahontas' tragic story. No mincing the truth, the author leads us down the path of how evil comes to play. While hard to read, I am grateful to the author for taking on this truth.

Laura Frantz is one of my favorite authors of historical romance. Her writing never fails to awe me with its sweet tone and vivid descriptions. She develops her characters fully, flaws and all. I enjoyed the slow build-up of the romance between Xander and Shelah. My only criticism, and it is a personal bias, is that the food descriptions were scant. With the amazing dishes that were served, I would have liked to see more developed descriptions.
