It’s really just not something that anyone can do alone- depending on where you live, you’ll have no choice but to need one. 


However, not all agents are created equal, and some may fall short of expectations. Unfortunately, just like any other profession, there’s always that potential for a bad apple. So, how can you know if someone is not worth your time and money? Well, there are a few signs to help you pinpoint, so here’s everything you need to know!

Limited Availability

If your agent has limited availability or is difficult to reach during crucial times, it can definitely hinder the progress of your deal. So, a dedicated agent understands the importance of being accessible and accommodating, especially during negotiations and contract signings.

Alright, so you can actually consider this one to be a huge red flag; if you’re getting the vibe, then you definitely need to look elsewhere. So, what you really need to keep in mind is that when it comes to this professional yet costly relationship, it’s going to be the importance of trust. Trust is the foundation of any successful real estate transaction. If you catch your agent in lies or notice a lack of transparency, it's a serious red flag that you need to get far away from ASAP. 


A trustworthy agent will always be honest about market conditions- legally speaking, they have to be. Plus, they’ll be transparent about the property values and potential challenges, even if the news is not what you want to hear. Lies won’t get the job done; in fact, likes will come back and bite you specifically. 

They Come Off as Unprofessional

As you know, first impressions matter, especially in real estate, since it’s very human-centric. If your agent presents themselves unprofessionally, it will almost always reflect poorly on your property- far from ideal. Generally speaking, some signs of unprofessionalism can include poorly designed marketing materials, low-quality photographs, and a general lack of attention to detail. Rudeness is also another pretty common sign that some surprisingly do.

Tech has to be involved; pamphlets and print ads just don’t cut it anymore. A bad agent may be technologically challenged, leading to missed opportunities. An effective agent should be proficient in using online platforms, social media, and other digital tools to reach a broader audience and provide seamless communication throughout the process.

Poor Negotiation Skills

Not everyone is able to catch this, but if you can catch this, then you will definitely need to move on to another agent. If your agent lacks the ability to negotiate effectively on your behalf, it could result in a less favorable deal- who would even want to deal with that?
