I’ll be honest with you… The idea of camping can feel like a lot at first.

There’s something about packing everything you need, sleeping outside, and stepping away from your usual comforts that can make you pause. I remember wondering whether I would forget something important or even enjoy it once I got there.
But here’s what I’ve learned: camping doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. In fact, the simplest trips are often the ones that stay with you the longest.
If you’ve been curious about camping but aren’t quite sure where to begin, let me walk you through it in a way that feels doable, gentle, and maybe even a little exciting!
Why Camping Is Worth Trying (Even If You’re Not “Outdoorsy”)
You don’t have to be an expert or particularly adventurous to enjoy camping.
Camping is really just an invitation to slow down. To notice things you might normally rush past. The way the air feels different in the evening. The quiet that settles in after sunset. The simple rhythm of a day without a long to-do list.
It’s not about doing everything right. It’s about being present.
Where Should You Go for Your First Camping Trip?
For your first trip, keep it easy on yourself.
Choose a campground that’s close to home. Truly. There is no need to travel far or try something remote. Look for a place that has a few comforts:
- Restrooms nearby
- Access to water
- Clearly marked campsites
A well-kept campground can make all the difference in how confident you feel. Your first trip should feel supportive, not overwhelming. We camp in a campground that is 10 minutes from home for the first one of the year. That's for a lot of reasons, but I can tell you that it feels like camping, even that close to home!
What to Pack (Keep It Simple)
You don’t need as much as you think you do.
Start with the basics:
- A tent and something soft to sleep on
- Sleeping bag or blankets
- Comfortable clothing with layers
- Toiletries and a flashlight
- Simple food and water
And then, bring one or two things that make it feel like you:
- A favorite snack
- A good book
- A small journal or even a watercolor kit
Camping isn’t about roughing it. It’s about creating a little pocket of comfort in a new place.
What to Expect Your First Night
The first night can feel a little unfamiliar.
It might be darker than you’re used to. Quieter… and sometimes noisier at the same time, with the sounds of nature all around you. You might notice the temperature shift as the evening settles in.
All of that is part of it.
Give yourself time to adjust. Take a deep breath. Let the experience unfold without judging it too quickly. By morning, it often feels entirely different.
Easy Camping Meals (Nothing Fancy Required)
Food tastes better outside. I don’t know why, but it just does. Almost everything we make we cook outside of our RV. On our first camping outing of the season, we keep things really simple.
- Sandwiches or wraps
- Fresh fruit
- Easy-to-heat meals
- A small treat you look forward to
And if you enjoy a glass of wine, this is a lovely place for it. Sitting outside, sharing something simple, letting the day come to a close… those are the moments you remember.
Common Beginner Mistakes (So You Don’t Have To Make Them)
Let me gently save you from a few things:
- Packing too much
- Choosing a campsite that’s too far or too remote
- Planning every minute of your trip
- Forgetting to check the weather
You don’t need perfection. You need a little preparation and a lot of flexibility. Ask me about my first camping adventure when it rained all night!
How to Make Camping Feel Cozy
This is where it becomes something special.
Add small touches that make your space feel inviting:
- A soft blanket
- Warm lighting or a lantern
- Comfortable clothes to change into at night
Take a few minutes to settle in when you arrive. Arrange your things. Create a space that feels calm and welcoming.
In typical Our Good Life style, this is an important part of the experience for me. A few dusk-to-dawn candles, a few party lights) battery powered, and an unbreakable vase of flowers for the picnic table are musts for me!
Why Your First Camping Trip Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Your first camping trip is not a test.
It’s a beginning.
There may be moments that feel awkward or uncertain, but there will also be moments that surprise you. A quiet morning. A laugh you didn’t expect. A sense of calm that feels new.
That’s what you’re really going for.
A Little Encouragement From Me to You
If you’ve been thinking about trying camping, let this be your gentle nudge.
Start small. Stay close. Pack simply. Give yourself permission to learn as you go.
You might just discover that you love it… not because everything went perfectly, but because you allowed yourself to experience something new.
And that, to me, is always worth it.
