Since your trip is costing you money, you may as well try to earn some back. Check out our guide to ten ways you can make money out of your holiday experiences.

1. Freelance travel journalism

Consider taking up journalism or freelance article writing for some extra money. You’ll want to pitch some of your ideas well in advance of your trip, but you’ll still be able to pitch editors when you come back. Travel journalism is in hot demand, especially if you’re paying for the trip yourself.

2. Work and travel

If your trip is lengthier, why not take a job while you’re away? It’ll offer a more rewarding experience of the place you’re visiting and you’ll get a better chance to make friends and learn the local language. However, if you’re planning a longer trip, you might want to learn some of the language in advance via sites like Memrise.

3. Travel photography

Just like journalism, you can pitch photography to editors of magazines or publications online. Freelance travel photography is always wanted, and it might make you a bit of extra money that you can put towards your next trip.

4. Unsplash, Pixabay, and Pexels

Any unsold pictures can be uploaded to stock photography sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, and Pexels. You can either do this for free or ask for small amounts of money. Be aware that any photos uploaded to stock photography sites can be used by anyone for free. Not every site requires that the user label the image with the owner’s credit, either.

5. Write a book

Travel is the ultimate inspiration, so why not write a book? You can either use your holiday experience as inspiration for a novel or write non-fiction instead. It’s hard to make money through writing, but you might be able to get a publisher interested. Failing that, you could self-publish to Amazon.

6. Write your memoirs

If your holiday is significant enough, you may be able to make some money by selling your memoirs. Usually, memoirs that aren’t about celebrities have an unusual angle or a powerful significance. If there’s something extra special about your trip, give it a go.

7. Go into tourism

Perhaps the holiday itself won’t earn you any money, but it could inspire you to change careers and go into tourism instead. Going into tourism may involve further trips, too. You never know; you may end being offered the chance to live and work abroad.

8. Real-life stories or letters pages in magazines

Many magazines actively look for real-life stories or letters and will pay a small sum for them. Keep an eye on your magazines, and write a list of all the titles that pay writers for holiday experiences. Check out how to write for business models like cory long reviews.
