With Super Bowl LX on the horizon, millions of Americans will be attending parties – regardless of whether they like football or not – to celebrate the biggest game in sports. The idea of a watch party has become a bit of a phenomenon in recent years, evolving into a cultural event in its own right, almost on par with Thanksgiving.
But hosting such a party can be stressful, especially if it is the first time. Below, we have put together a bit of a checklist to help you think through various aspects of the party, ensuring your guests have a great time regardless of how the game itself pans out.
- Think About Easy Food
The Super Bowl is the main event, so don’t go too overboard in planning an elaborate menu. Consider that most of the ‘typical’ sports foods – wings, sliders, pizzas, etc., – are usually eaten by hand; this is by design. Also, remember that as host, you don’t want to spend the evening cooking, so consider foods that can be cooked in batches and reheated as and when you need it.
- Consider Your Seating Plan
Try to picture where your guests will sit (or stand) and make some arrangements as to the seating. It might mean moving furniture or even removing seats to make more room, but it will be worth it to make your guests comfortable.
- Have a Non-Football Space
Not everyone at your party may care about the game, so try to create a space in a separate room where they can escape the action if they prefer. You don’t need to separate your guests as such, but having a little space set aside if your main room gets rowdy could be highly appreciated.
- Plan Some Extra Activities
Football can be boring, especially for non-fans, so there is nothing wrong with prepping some additional fun. You can, for instance, design a sweepstake with prizes, checking the Super Bowl odds for the most likely players to score the first touchdown, likely props, and so on.
- Don’t Overdo It with Cocktails
As with the food, the last thing you want to do is spend the night mixing cocktails. Send guests a message asking for their favorite drinks, and keep it simple with beers, wines and soft drinks. If cocktails are needed, make sure it’s something that can be created in batches. Don’t spend your night beating egg whites.
- Check Televisions and Electronic Equipment
- Sort the Bathroom
It’s not glamorous, but it matters. Stock extra toilet roll, put out hand soap and make sure there’s a clean hand towel.
- Think About Noise Neighbours
Super Bowl LX will run late, and people tend to get louder as the game goes on. If you’re in an apartment or have thin walls, keep windows closed, and move the party away from shared walls if possible. And avoid blasting the soundbar. Inform your neighbors before the party.
- Have a “Spill Kit” Ready
Super Bowl parties = sauce, beer, and accidents. Keep a kitchen roll, wipes, and a bin bag ready to go. Bonus points for having a cheap stain remover spray in the cupboard.
- Don’t Forget the Temperature
If you’ve got a crowded living room, it gets warm. Crack a window, keep the room ventilated, and have a few throws or spare blankets for anyone camped out on chairs or floors.
