Today is National Egg Day, and I am celebrating with this delicious Italian Frittata. A frittata is an Italian egg dish, similar to an omelet. There are several differences, though, which I will share with you. A frittata is open-faced, while an omelet is folded. A frittata is fried then baked, an omelet is completely fried. A frittata is slow-cooked on the stovetop, then baked to finish it off and the omelet is cooked at medium-high heat until the eggs are set and ready to fold.
One thing is definitely similar: the creative options for both a frittata and an omelet are truly endless. You can mix and match ingredients based on what you have on hand or what you're craving. Keep reading for a delicious, hand-crafted frittata recipe and some side dishes that will make it POP!
How to Make A Delicious Italian Frittata
For this version of eggy goodness, I decided to give the frittata an Italian twist using creamy Italian cheese, rich tomato sauce, and a medley of sautéed vegetables. The result is absolutely delicious, and I just can't get enough of it. It’s soft, flavorful, and wonderfully custardy, thanks to the gentle, slow stovetop cooking that allows the eggs to set just right without drying out. Doesn't that sound heavenly?

Italian Frittata
Ingredients
- 2 cups spinach leaves
- 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
- 1 Tablespoon butter
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 5 eggs
- 1 Tablespoon heavy cream
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 c ricotta cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400.
- Melt butter in pan.
- Saute vegetables in butter until softened.
- In the meantime, beat egg mixture and cream together.
- Pour over vegetables in the pan.
- Dollop tomato sauce and ricotta cheese on top of the eggs.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook on low heat 10 minutes.
- Remove from stovetop and place in the oven for 10 minutes.
- Serve hot.
Notes:
Eggs will puff up in the oven and fall when removed. That's normal and doesn't affect the taste.
Baking or frying at too high of a heat results in tough eggs.
Precook veggies for the best texture.
Use full fat-dairy products, and the others are too watery.
What To Serve With Frittata
- Mixed Greens with Olive Oil: A light salad with fresh arugula or baby spinach, tossed in high-quality olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar, makes the perfect balance.
- Crusty Italian Bread or Focaccia: Add some slices of bread or herb-studded focaccia to scoop up bits of tomato and melted Parmigiano Reggiano left on the plate.
- Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary and Olive Oil: Roast baby potatoes until golden and crispy, seasoned with rosemary and a generous glug of olive oil. They’re a nice, easy companion to any frittata recipe.
- Marinated Artichokes and Olives: Keep it simple and Italian with a small plate of marinated artichoke hearts and olives. The flavor is a great contrast to the cheesey frittata.
- Citrus Salad or Fresh Fruit: This one is a little different, but I think it's great! A chilled citrus salad with orange slices, mint, and a drizzle of honey brings a bright finish to your meal.
- Espresso or Prosecco: Round out your fancy Italian brunch with a classic espresso or a celebratory glass of Prosecco. Both pair beautifully with the flavors of a homemade frittata.
