Is Your Home As Safe As It Could Be

For so many of us, our homes are a place of safety and refuge. A place where we get away from the troubles of the world and recharge. A place that holds and protects the things that are most precious in life to us. That is why so many of us would also be distraught to hear that our homes are not as safe as they could be. Read on to find out more below.

Things inside your home

Sometimes it's the items we have inside our homes that are not as safe as they could be. Beds, for example, can seem like a simple and safe item, but that is not always the case. For instance, when parents choose to cosleep with their babies its usually much safer to invest in cosleeping cribs that fasten to the side of the bed and provide a separate and safe space for the baby, while still being in mom and dad's reach.

Similarly, some kids, including those with medical and other additional needs, can benefit from beds that have been especially designed with their safety in mind. These beds are built to be enclosed on all sides, ensuring both comfort and additional safety from falling in the night. Thereby providing a safer option that allows both child and parent to get a better night’s sleep.

Your home structure

Sometimes it is our home's structure that is unsafe. One example of this is an issue known as subsidence. This is when the ground surrounding the foundations of your home moves, making it unstable and causing one or more of the walls to slide into a different position. The remedy for subsidence is to have your walls underpinned, or use the more modern approach of resin injection to stabilize them.

Those living in earthquake zones also often worry about the structural safety of their homes. This is because any home that is not structurally safe will be at a higher risk of collapsing if there is an earthquake. Indeed, in many cases, retrofitting homes with earthquake protection is the best approach here. You can even book a site elevation here to find out whether your home could benefit from such retrofitting. Then a professional will come to your property and provide a detailed report that will give you the information you need to make an educated decision.

Substances inside your home

It's very common for most homes to contain substances that can be toxic or damage health. For instance, many homes will contain toxic chemicals such as bleach and cleaning items. To stay safe, it's important that you always use them in line with the instructions provided, and that you keep them in a safe spot away from animals and children.

Other risky substances inside your home could include toxic VOC gases released from paints and even plywood furniture. Where possible its best to avoid these altogether if you can. Although ensuring your home is properly aired out, and these items are not placed in the rooms of young children and babies can help reduce some of the impact,
