Grocery Cart Recipe Swap-Hummus

(picture shown is of homemade black bean hummus)
Bob and I have been making our own hummus for quite awhile. Here is the recipe we use. I want to add that we are very creative with this recipe as it is very forgiving!

1 can of garbanzo beans (strained and rinsed)
2 cloves of garlic, minced (you can always use more)
2 tbsp tahini (look for it in the peanut butter aisle)
Juice from a lemon, a T or so
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

optional: add in 1 full roasted red pepper, or, 1 c black beans, or 1 whole artichoke from a can.

Place all of the ingredients in a food processor for a few minutes, or until the mixture is creamy and smooth.
Serve in a bowl with fresh veggies. This is a snack Bob will eat as he has gone all HEALTHY on me.

  1. Hi Terri - I'm going to make this for Super Bowl Sunday. Maybe it will set off all the BAD stuff we will be having!! LOL

  2. I had no idea you could make that stuff from scratch. I know - DUH, but I've only seen it in stores. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  3. Quite sure that I'd be miserable if my beloved ever goes all healthy on me, but he's teetering awfully close. Hummus...I have never been able to get used to it, though it certainly sounds healthful!

  4. Hi Terri. We make hummus too...as our girls love it and if I put it out with veggies or flax seed or corn chips they will make a meal of it!
    Warmly,
    Tracey

    P. S. One great trick I learned last summer is that sesame oil is a great substitute for Tahini (which is a paste made from grinding up sesame seeds) if you're out or can't find it. I keep my bottle in the refrigerator to keep it from becoming rancid.

  6. Exactly how I make mine too ... now I think I will look for some sesame oil. I wonder if flaxseed oil would work too? I LOVE hummus!

Thanks! We love hummus and pita chips for a snack. I appreciate Tracey saying you can substitute sesame oil for tahini cause I actually have that on hand.
